When did you know you wanted to be an author? I grew up loving stories. Whether they were in books and comics or films, I was mesmerised by the storytelling process. So as far back as I can remember I’ve been writing. As far back as primary school I can remember being recognised for my imagination. Writing is in my blood.

What inspired you to write this book? There were some really good animated adventure stories on television when I was going to school. Johnny Quest and Thunder Birds had a major influence on me and I’ve always imagined writing something like that. Then came the era of the Young Adult books. There are so many great YA authors and books out there but so few young black protagonists. I’m a fan of sci-Fi and I wanted to create an exciting contemporary tale around a sci-fi theme and with a fresh young character.

If you could sell this book in one sentence what would it be? “Stop playing small, you are more powerful than you think Joshua N’Gon.”

What are you up to next? I’m working on the second book in the series called Joshua N’Gon and the Battle for St. Augustine. I’m hoping to make this a four-part series.

Who is your biggest inspiration? JK Rowling and Octavia Butler. JK has single-handedly created a world and characters that has captured the imagination of the planets readers young and old. Her success is mind-blowing, but her stories justify the hype. The late Octavia Butler is a African-American sci-fi writer who began her career in an era of racial prejudice and segregation. She wrote some ground-breaking work that has stood the test of time, inspiring many other writers of colour.
