This story begins in modern Chicago then moves to fifth-century Transylvania.

The teenage protagonists, Glenda and Traveler, are sent by Theo, their sanctuary god, deep into the primeval forests of the Carpathian Mountains. They must locate then neutralize an ancient demi-god called a “fire beast”.

The two must also survive the daunting challenges of isolated fifth-century Transylvania. Rome is now in its final death throes and the hoof beats of Attila the Hun echo across Europe. Civilization and Pax Romana are distant memories.

Magic, wits, and youthful courage must combine to face the fire creature. Survival, much less winning, is up for grabs.

  1. When did you know that you wanted to be an author?

I was a mathematician and businessman. My writing was concise, factual, and likely boring. The fun writing began after an early retirement. My family was living in a stone farmhouse in rural France.  To settle the three young children down at night I started telling them my own made-up tales. The children loved the story time and I continued it when we returned home. Years later I decided to write the stories up as a series.

  1. What inspired you to write this book?

To start I wanted to pass on a very personal legacy to my family. In addition, I have read a lot of fantasy fiction over the decades and feel my series compares favourably to other well written young adult fantasy books. I believe my plot lines, use of history, and character development are worthy of a broader audience beyond my family.

  1. If you could sell this book in one sentence what would it be?

‘Reader, you will enjoy the action anchored in magic, ancient gods, and fun history along with getting to know the two hero teens, Traveler and Glenda.’

  1. What are you up to next?

My wife, Nancy, and I are traveling to Prague for three months for an adventure. While there I will finalize Book 3 in the series and start Book 4.

  1. Who is your biggest inspiration?

I became an avid reader by age six, and loved the animal tales of Thornton Burgess. My early heroes were King Arthur, Merlyn, Robin Hood, and Alfred the Great. They set the bar high for personal character and leadership. As an American hero, George Washington tops my list. Without George America may not have become the major country it is today. Similarly, without Alfred, modern day England may not exist. George and Alfred faced great challenges; the two would have certainly respected each other as being extraordinary leaders in war and peace.

David E. Dresner was born and raised in rural Ohio. He was an Eagle Scout and later high school president in both his junior and senior years. The social mores, the friendships, and the rivalries of his youth were character building and era defining and have stayed with him into adulthood. Dresner studied physics and mathematics at Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon, earning a B.S. and M.S, before training to become an actuary. Dresner enjoyed considerable professional success, working at major business consultancy firms at CEO and COO level before taking early retirement and starting a family. He has since dedicated himself to giving back to his community, supporting small businesses, churches and schools by developing their strategic plans, as well as tutoring children in core academic studies. Having travelled extensively and lived in France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, today David and his wife Nancy live in a rural part of Virginia, near Charlottesville. He is currently working on the fourth instalment of The Allies of Theo series; he will publish his third novel in 2020.
