Fixpoint Full Tour Banner

When Matt Howard’s grandfather told him he must alter history to protect his newborn son, Matt thought the old man was crazy…

…Then he realised it was true.

Overstrike spans 4 generations of a family haunted by the prospect of an approaching alternate reality where their child has been erased from history.
Touching on themes of retro-causality, ethics and free will, and exploring ideas of cause, effect and retribution, it follows the path of Matt Howard, whose child, Ethan, is at risk, as he, his father and grandfather attempt to use their own abilities to manipulate reality in order to discover and prevent whoever is threatening Ethan.

Overstrike is volume I of Fixpoint, a trilogy about a family who discover their inherited ability to manipulate reality. It enables them to effect changes in order to safeguard themselves and all that they hold dear. But even seemingly small changes in a timeline can have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences. Follow the stories of the Howards, on a journey exploring reality, time and our own sense of self.

Volume I of the Fixpoint Trilogy

Fixpoint Overstrike

  1. When did you know that you wanted to be an author?

*Laughs* This may sound like an odd answer but I’m not entirely sure. i believe it was the 27th of December 2014 – if not, it was definitely one Saturday morning round then when I decided to become a writer while submerged in the bath – I think I’d just woken up and still had fragments of a dream in my head.

  1. What inspired you to write this book?

I’m not so sure ‘inspired’ is the right word. In a way, I seem to get stories like ear-worms – If I don’t write them they nag at me like an itch you need to scratch. Overstrike was like that – I knew I had a story I wanted to tell and, as part of that, had a lot of ideas that I wanted to get out there. Some of these were pure fantasy, some of these, I guess, was my way of dealing with a lot of challenges I had following a pretty-horrific car-crash in 2010 – So all in all, it was probably a reasonable dose of catharsis together with a love of science fiction, post-modern works like Marquez’s 100-years of solitude and tv-shows like Black mirror – a real mixed bag.

  1. If you could sell this book in one sentence what would it be?

Overstrike: Volume 1 of the Fixpoint trilogy is a speculative fiction, alt History/Time-travel Thriller and an exploration of morals, ethics, society and free will.

However, I also like the way that Gary Dalkin described it:

“hugely ambitious and ingeniously plotted science fiction thriller.”

  1. What are you up to next?

Writing-wise I have 2 projects on the go:

  • First is a charity anthology I’m organising with the working title of “Darkness” to support and raise awareness for men’s mental health. I’ve assembled a team of published authors known as the Sons of Twisted Fate and they’re kindly offering their services for free. This is looking to come out in October 2020.
  • Second is Chimera & Origins: Volumes 2 & 3 in the Fixpoint trilogy. This continues where Overstrike leaves off but where Overstrike explores themes of ethics, morals, society and free-will, Chimera (vol II), amongst other things, explores gender, identity and self. Origins (Vol III) concludes the saga and tackles spirituality, magic, self-actualization & transcendence.

  1. Who is your biggest inspiration?

I’d have to say my family. It seems like nowadays, information and content is available on-tap like never before. Since so much music, literature and art is literally available at the push of a button, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the world is there to be consumed, that there is nothing new to say – never mind write. I fundamentally disagree with that view and want to teach my kids that the world isn’t *read-only*, it isn’t something simply there to be consumed, but is instead something to be enriched by their unique contribution.

Just as John Donne argues in “No man is an island”, every person’s contribution diminishes or enriches all of us.

Whatever your goals, whether you want to write a book, make an album become a doctor, study martial arts – *Just do it!* It may take you, five or ten years but with enough determination, most things are possible – The world is *read-write* – and if I can live by that, hopefully, so can they.
