When materials engineer Zoey Butler lands her dream job at Future State Energy, she believes her research in renewable energy will make headlines. Unfortunately for her, she’s right. Zoey is working on her latest experiment when FBI Special Agent Alexis Thompson and her K-9 partner, Waffle, raid Future State and arrest the head of the development for fraud. Zoey helps the FBI find answers in the aftermath, but she soon finds herself jobless and unemployable. Desperate and out of options, she reaches out to Alexis, the one person who knows Zoey was duped like everyone else.
Liam Graham is an FBI special agent and instructor at Riverbend K-9 Academy. When Alexis brings in a new recruit with an unusual background, Liam pairs her up with Tasha, a dog in need of a handler to stay in their competitive program. Zoey is thrilled to put her past behind her and give the mischievous rescue dog her own second chance. However, shortly after she arrives, the FBI realizes the Future State case is far from closed. And Zoey may be the key to solving it.
Zoey offers to go back to Future State to help the FBI end things once and for all. Only this time, she’ll have Liam and Tasha for backup. But, the problems at Future State are more explosive than any of them suspect.
MY INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR
1. When did you know that you wanted to be an author?
Writing my own books snuck up on me a bit, although, in retrospect, it really shouldn’t have! I’ve always been a bookworm whose idea of relaxing almost always involves a book. My bookshelves are filled with thrillers, romance, mystery, fantasy, non-fiction, you name it. It was only a matter of time before I added my own words to the mix. I started writing books that pulled elements from my favorite kinds of books and mixed them with women in STEM, as I am an engineer and love bringing a dash of science and engineering to my plots. And I suppose the rest is history!
2. What inspired you to write this book?
I introduced Alexis and her dog in Calculated Reaction, and so many readers commented on how much they loved the addition of Waffle the Labrador retriever to the story. It wasn’t long after releasing that book that I realized I could not only write a whole series with FBI K-9s, but also that it sounded like a lot of fun.
3. If you could sell this book in one sentence what would it be?
If you love strong heroines and their dogs, a clever mystery to solve, and a bit of banter with your HEA, I think you’ll love A Nose for Mischief.
4. What are you up to next?
Elise, Zoey’s sister, features in the next book in the Riverbend K-9 series, An Ear for Trouble. Elise is such a great character and we only see the tip of the iceberg of her personality in A Nose for Mischief. I’m having a lot of fun writing her story.
5. Who is your biggest inspiration?
I know a lot of people say this, but my mom is a huge inspiration to me. She showed me the power of teamwork and perseverance. She is an amazing beta reader because she truly loves to read the books, but she isn’t going to say she loves everything if she doesn’t! She will tell me what she likes and exactly what isn’t working for the same reason she’d tell me if I had broccoli in my teeth. She is relentlessly supportive but also isn’t afraid to tell me to fix it and get on with it!
