A daily newspaper in February 2009 has an image of an old man shackled to a police officer by handcuffs. It looks like any other arrest and detention. The famous cases included here include those of Rachel Nickell, Keith Lyon, Lesley Moleseed, the World’s End killings, plus many others, not forgetting the Cardiff Three and Sean Hodgson’s false imprisonment, one of the longest ever miscarriages of justice.
Before the stories are told, the basics of DNA sampling are explained, and the lab work in each case is discussed in every chapter.
MY REVIEW
I thought that this was a really interesting book and I liked finding out and reading more about how the DNA science has developed over time and how vital it now is.
This book felt in part a little personal too me on one of the cases as I will always remember sitting in assembly at school when a serious of Police Officers and Detectives came in to let us know that Naomi Smith has been found to have been murdered the night before. I was 13 at the time and it is something that has stayed with me since.
This book on that basis, which contained the Smith case, was fascinating. I knew the people involved in terms of who they were, not on a personal basis but I knew the places talked about, the areas covered with the DNA samples and had seen Naomi and her friend Emma at school.
It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon. The cases that were elected were good and there was quite a range from those caught by the DNA evidence, to those freed too due to wrongful or unsafe convictions. Highly recommended!
